Standing beneath imperial eagles with a heavy battle axe resting across his shoulders, the warrior combines Norse ferocity with Byzantine splendor — chainmail, lamellar armor, crimson cloth and the unmistakable weight of imperial service.
The Latin inscription “Fidelis ad Mortem” — Faithful Unto Death — captures the loyalty for which the Guard became famous.
